چکیده

Review scope Included studies compared US (landmarking before or real time during the procedure) with a standard, nonimaging technique, such as palpation or loss of resistance (change in pressure on the piston of the syringe when the epidural space is entered). Exclusion criteria were procedures involving peripheral nerves or caudal, paravertebral, radicular, or plexus regions. Outcomes included failed procedures (absence of cerebrospinal fluid sample, not placing or needing to replace the epidural catheter, or need for additional intraoperative analgesia), traumatic procedures (visible blood aspiration or red blood cell count greater than defined threshold in cerebrospinal fluid), number of insertion attempts (withdrawal with a new skin puncture), and number of needle redirections (no further skin punctures).
